Harness solar energy

Buildigo is the craftsmen network of the Swiss Mobiliar insurance and partner of EnergieSchweiz and its “renewable heating” program. We provide professionals for photovoltaic systems throughout Switzerland and are at your side with advice and support from the initial consultation to the installation of your solar system.

Get your PV system within 3-4 months

Would you like to equip your roof with a solar system and produce your own electricity using the sun's energy? Solar energy is sustainable, renewable and trendy. In addition to climate protection, solar technology has another big advantage: with a solar system you can save on heating or electricity costs. The best thing is: our partners can deliver within 3-4 months and local specialists take care of the advice and installation of your photovoltaic system.

Costs for a solar system in Switzerland

The costs for a solar system are never exactly the same, as the size of a photovoltaic system always depends on the household's energy consumption. In order to create a certain level of comparability, we will assume below a single-family home with 4 people.

Such a household has an approximate energy requirement of 4,500 kWh of electricity and 20,000 kWh of heat (heating and hot water). A photovoltaic system with an output of 8 kilowatts peak would in theory completely cover the electricity requirement. In reality, however, the electricity produced during the day cannot always be consumed directly.

Instead, the electricity is fed into the grid and power is drawn from the grid during peak times. This means that around 30 percent of solar power is used in an average household. With an 8 kilowatt peak system like in our example, 2,400 kWh can be consumed. This directly covers over 50 percent of the electricity requirement.

An 8 kilowatt peak system takes up an area of approximately 40 to 56 m² and costs around CHF 20,000 (not taking subsidies into account). An additional battery storage unit would increase self-consumption to 4,000 kWh, but would also lead to higher costs of between CHF 9,000 and 15,000. This CHF 20,000 includes not only the solar modules on the roof, but also the expenses for the other components of the system:

  • the inverter

  • the connections and cables

  • the control system and the meter

  • the assembly system

Funding for solar systems

In Switzerland, homeowners receive funding for every type of solar system. There are different variants, but for most private individuals the only option that is interesting is funding via a one-off payment. It is calculated from a basic amount of 700 francs and an additional 380 francs per kilowatt of nominal output. You can also apply for a feed-in tariff from the local electricity company.

Buying a solar system: What should I pay attention to?

To get a feel for how sized a solar system should be and how high the costs will be, you need to know the consumption of your home. For electricity consumption, you only need to check the annual electricity bill. The optimal dimensioning of a photovoltaic system is often 2 kilowatt peak per 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity consumption. With an average electricity consumption of 4,500 kWh, that means around 9 kilowatts peak.

Is my roof suitable for solar?

Sloping roofs facing south and with an inclination of 25 to 30 degrees are considered ideal for solar systems. However, this does not mean that all other roofs are unsuitable. With photovoltaic systems, the amount of self-consumption of the electricity produced is more important than the roof orientation. If there is no other option available, a photovoltaic system can be installed even on a roof on the north side if the dimensions and planning are correct.

However, an actual no-go is shading the solar system by extensions, neighboring houses or trees. Reducing the performance of a single module due to the chimney, for example, results in poorer overall performance. If a roof turns out to be completely unsuitable for a solar system, photovoltaic technology can also be used via a solar facade.

Here you can find out immediately whether your roof is suitable for a photovoltaic system.
