Pruning hedges - when, how and why?

To keep your hedge healthy and in shape, it needs to be trimmed regularly. Hedges provide a habitat for many different animals and birds - which is why they must not be radically cut back between 1 March and 30 September. The ideal time for trimming hedges is during the winter months between November and February. Hedge maintenance should be completed by mid-March. What is the maximum height of a hedge in Switzerland?

The rules and regulations regarding the height and distance from the property boundary of a hedge are regulated at cantonal level. To avoid any problems, you should inquire about the applicable legislation from your local municipality or canton.

When may hedge plants be pruned in Switzerland?

According to the law, hedges may be pruned all year round. However, the best time for topiary pruning is from the end of July to the end of August. Before pruning, however, check that there are no nests or other breeding sites in the hedge. If this is the case, you should postpone pruning.

When may hedges be radically pruned?

According to Swiss law, radical pruning may be carried out between 1 October and 28 February. This ensures that birds are not disturbed during the breeding season.

The best time to prune a hedge depends on the growth and flowering characteristics of the respective plants. Deciduous shrubs should be pruned between the end of June and mid-July and flowering hedges after their flowering period.
